Legal aid clinic to host first charity golf event, Oct. 8

By Jo Mathis Legal News For 46 years, the Free Legal Aid Clinic (FLAC) at Wayne State University Law School has provided free legal aid to Wayne County's elderly and indigent residents. On Saturday, Oct. 8, the community is invited to support that important work by participating in FLAC's first-ever charity golf event. Golfers and non-golfers alike are welcome, said Jordan Leff, secretary of the law school's oldest and largest legal aid clinic. "We've never done this before, and we're hoping it'll be a big success," said Leff, who hopes to find sponsors -- local businesses and law firms -- for each of the 18 holes. "The Free Legal Aid Clinic has a wonderful history of helping Wayne County residents for quite a while. There are so few free legal aid organizations left, particularly in the Detroit area, that we've always had a lot of people depending on us." FLAC started as a student-run nonprofit organization and continues today in partnership with Lakeshore Legal Aid and the Elder Law & Advocacy Center. Most of the student attorneys who work at FLAC go through extensive training in elder law and family law, and then work as student attorneys for a salary. Others can intern through Wayne State Law School and receive credit for their work under the close supervision of licensed attorneys. FLAC workers provide legal assistance in state court on elder law and family law matters, such as custody, support, visitation, and divorce. "The elderly are victims of all sorts of scams, dishonest dealings, identity theft," said Leff, noting that students also help with documents such as wills, trusts, and powers of attorney. "We have a lot of elderly clients who come in and are sort of lost as to how to rectify their situation. We're able to help them get some peace of mind." The Free Legal Aid Clinic first golf outing and silent auction dinner will be held on Saturday, Oct. 8 at the Northville Hills County Club, 15565 Bay Hills Dr. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., a shotgun start will sound at 9 a.m., and a reception, silent auction and awards begin at 2 p.m. Registration is open until Friday, Sept. 23.
