Art museum showcases area man's collection

DETROIT (AP) -- The Detroit Institute of Arts is showcasing a series of works provided to the museum as a bequest from the late James Pearson Duffy, one of the city's most unorthodox collectors. The exhibition is called "Gift of a Lifetime: The James Pearson Duffy Collection" and runs through March 8. It features a varied collection of drawings, paintings, prints, sculptures and photographs. The exhibition is free with museum admission. For 40 years, Duffy was one of the great characters on the Detroit art scene. He often was guided by his intuition, and the collection that resulted represents a variety of interests -- from contemporary photography to historical Chinese ceramics. Duffy died in 2009. He owned and operated a successful pipefitting warehouse in Detroit. Published: Fri, Sep 23, 2011
