WLAM requests nominations for Mary Foster Award

By Frank Weir Legal News The Women Lawyers Association of Michigan Washtenaw Region is requesting nominations for its annual Mary Foster Award which will be presented at its holiday party on Wednesday, Dec. 14. A WLAM spokesperson noted that Mary Foster was the first woman lawyer in Ann Arbor. She entered law school at age 49, and graduated with high honors from the University of Michigan Law School in 1876. According to "The History of Washtenaw County," 1881 edition: "Mrs. Foster ranks high among the profession in this part of the state, and her success has exceeded her most sanguine expectations." "Therefore, in honor of Mrs. Foster's achievement, the award bearing her name is bestowed annually to a member of our organization whose leadership, talent, and significant contributions to women provide a role model for women in the profession and women in general." The spokesperson added thatpast recipients of the awardhave included: Jean King, the Honorable Barbara Hackett, the Honorable Melinda Morris, Zena Zumeta, Sally Rutzky, Sally Fink, Barb Kessler, the Honorable Elizabeth Hines, the Honorable Darlene O'Brien, Teresa Killeen, Rebecca Shiemke, the Honorable Ann Mattson, Jennifer Salvatore, and last year's recipient, Suellyn Scarnecchia. Nominations for this year's award will be accepted until November 23. The nomination should contain a concise statement about the nominee and the reasons she should receive the award.
