Michigan Legislature set to officially adjourn
LANSING (AP) -- The Michigan Legislature will formally adjourn for the year with a session today.
No voting is scheduled. The session is called "sine die," which is Latin for "without day."
Lawmakers wrapped up this year's voting on Dec. 15. They're expected to resume voting sessions in the second week of January.
Today's session is a formality, but it does have some legal significance. Any bill signed by the governor takes effect 90 days after the session, unless lawmakers have voted for legislation to take effect earlier or on some other date.
One measure that will take effect 90 days after the upcoming session is legislation permitting more charter schools in Michigan. The effective date kicks in early enough for more schools to open for the 2012-13 school year.
