Bar Revue promises best gala yet

By Jo Mathis Legal News Ypsilanti attorney Greg Dodd says the Washtenaw County Bar Association's 24th annual Bar Revue & Silent Auction will be the best yet. Especially for those who like a good laugh. ''The theme is Academy Awards night - Hollywod Style,'' said Dodd, co-chair of the WCBA Bar Revue Committee, along with Washtenaw County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney John Reiser III. ''There will be live presenters introducing the movie clips, and winners galore from our local lawyer talent pool. Actual trophies will be handed out to the winners. There are a lot of lawyers out there who should be preparing their acceptance speeches.'' Reservations are due Friday, Feb. 3 for this event, which will begin with cocktails and a silent auction at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 9 at the Sheraton Ann Arbor Grande Ballroom, 3200 Boardwalk, Ann Arbor. A buffet dinner will begin at 6:15 p.m., followed by the Awards Show at 6:55 p.m. The silent auction will benefit Legal Services of South Central Michigan. The cost to attend the event is $45. ''The Bar Revue Show is an opportunity to give free reign to the crazy things I am thinking when I'm in court, and have to be serious,'' said Dodd, when asked what he likes best about it. ''The show is supposed to be a talent show. We find that we can capture the talent on film and show it. Our local lawyers don't need much script or direction. They just need a camera pointed at them.'' Dodd says the acceptance speeches this year will provide a live component. ''Since 2006, we have had more videos than live entertainment,'' he said. ''We welcome any lawyer who can sing, dance, juggle, or spin plates on top of poles. But usually the videos that John and I produce are the majority of the show.'' New to the event this year is a Pro Bono/Public Service Award which will be presented to Thomas E. Daniels, an attorney with Pear Sperling Eggan & Daniels, P.C. in Ypsilanti. Anyone who wants to perform should contact Dodd or Reiser. ''If anyone has their heart set on winning an award, they should let us know and we can probably arrange it,'' said Dodd. ''But acceptance speeches should be kept to 30 seconds or less, or they will get hauled off the stage as the music plays them away. But the memories will last a lifetime.''
