Tertzag Tribute: Levin to deliver keynote address
By John Minnis
Legal News
Wayne County Circuit Court Judge David Allen will be this year's recipient of the "prestigious" Purple Sport Coat at the third annual Tertzag Tribute Dinner to be held Thursday, Feb. 23, in Dearborn.
Allen will be "upstaged" by keynote speaker U.S. Sen. Carl Levin.
"We are thrilled Sen. Levin agreed to be our keynote speaker. He follows distinguished speakers from previous years Norm Tucker and Gov. James Blanchard," said Kara Tertzag Lividini, daughter of the late Judge Tertzag and a member of the Tertzag Tribute Dinner committee. "We are excited to hear Sen Levin's message."
The Tertzag Tribute Dinner is held in honor of Judge Kaye "Chach" Tertzag, who died Feb. 4, 2009, leaving a great legacy of integrity and service to the State of Michigan, as well as a great example of love and devotion to his family and legion of friends.
Judge Tertzag was known for wearing colorful ties and sport coats. The Kaye Tertzag Purple Sport Coat Award is bestowed annually in recognition of those that best exemplify the life and work of Kaye Tertzag. Recipients demonstrate exceptional commitment to his legendary excellence in the legal profession, civility in and outside the courtroom, and mentorship in the legal arena.
This year's honoree, Judge Allen, was mentored for many years by Judge Tertzag.
"Judge Allen was a dear friend of my father, my father mentored him, and he would be so happy to see David in the purple coat," Tertzag Lividini said.
"Kaye is what I aspire to be," Allen told friends and family at Kaye Tertzag's memorial service three years ago. "Kaye's legacy will be first an foremost judicial restraint. Kaye brought heart to the bench."
Past honorees retired Judge James Rashid and attorney Joseph Lujan will present the Purple Sport Coat to Allen.
The Tertzag Tribute Dinner committee said it is honored to have Sen. Levin as keynote speaker. Levin will continue the tradition of high-profile keynote speakers at this event.
"Judge Tertzag and Senator Levin were friends and mutual supporters," according to the tribute committee. "We are excited to hear Senator Levin's message!"
Of course, no gathering of Tertzag family and friends would be complete without the traditional "sambuca toast" started by Kaye's daughter, Kara, at her father's memorial.
The third annual Tertzag Tribute Dinner will be at the Park Place Banquet Hall in Dearborn from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Park Place is located at the corner of Park and Outer Drive, just south of Michigan Avenue. Tickets are $35 and include dinner and an open bar. Checks should be made payable to: Tertzag Tribute Dinner, LLC, and sent to 26815 Winslow Drive, Flat Rock, MI 48134. Spouses and/or significant others are welcome. This event will sell out, so buy tickets now.
Attendees are encouraged to wear purple to the event. Those who wear purple will be entered into a drawing for a door prize at the end of the evening.
"The last two years have been great events," Tertzag Lividini said, "lots of fun and reminiscing, and clearly the place to be seen! We are so excited for the event!"
