High court turns down appeal in bridge dispute
DETROIT (AP) -- The Michigan Supreme Court won't get involved in a dispute that put the billionaire owner of the Ambassador Bridge in jail for a night in January.
The court said Wednesday it won't take an appeal from Manuel "Matty" Moroun and bridge executive Dan Stamper. A Wayne County judge sent them to jail for civil contempt for failing to follow orders on a construction project connecting the bridge to area interstates.
The state appeals court released Moroun and Stamper after one night. The appeals court subsequently upheld the punishment but said the judge should have explained what the men had to do to get out of jail.
Fearing even more jail time for the pair, Detroit International Bridge Co. in February said it would follow the judge's orders on the project.
