Verizon Wireless shuts Mich. center, affecting 750
SOUTHFIELD (AP) -- Verizon Wireless says it's closing its suburban Detroit call center by the end of June, affecting 750 jobs.
Company spokeswoman Michelle Gilbert tells The Oakland Press of Pontiac the Southfield center's closing is part of a restructuring that affects 3,175 employees nationwide.
A center in Bellevue, Wash., also will close by the end of June, and a Houston site will close by the end of September.
Gilbert says the company isn't eliminating the call center jobs but is shifting them to other locations. She says affected workers will have a choice of taking jobs at other call centers with relocation assistance, seeking other positions with the company in Michigan or taking a severance package.
Gilbert tells The Detroit News the company will have about 1,700 Michigan employees after the closing.
