Access to Bankruptcy Court: Auction to help families in poverty
On Wednesday, July 18, Access to Bankruptcy Court (ABC), a State Bar of Michigan "Access to Justice" program, will be hosting its Annual Charity Wine Tasting and Silent Auction at the Empire Restaurant & Lounge located at 52963 Van Dyke Ave. in Shelby Twp. from 6 to 9 p.m. to help individuals and families who are living in poverty.
This charity was formed after local attorneys, judges and educators recognized a need for poverty-stricken individuals suffering financial hardship to have essential legal representation. In many cases, these people suffered some catastrophic event such as an illness, disability, or a death in the family that plunged them into economic ruin through no fault of their own.
For example, one ABC client was homeless, living in his truck in the woods, disabled, and had his monthly Social Security disability check garnished at 60% for a very old debt. He could no longer live on the $240 per month he was allowed to keep, and was despondent and suicidal. ABC provided him with bankruptcy representation that allowed him to keep more of his income. His ABC attorney stated that "I believe that the ABC program literally saved that man's life."
Another ABC client was a fifty-something unemployed single woman who provides around-the-clock home care to her elderly parents. She speaks very limited English and her sole source of income was from the State of Michigan's Home Help Program. This income was insufficient to cover her costs, and she was becoming increasingly destitute and hounded by creditors. With ABC's help, bankruptcy became an option for this woman, giving her to get a fresh start while she searches for a permanent job.
ABC provides those living in poverty with the relief they need from mounting medical bills and other debts.
With the assistance of experienced bankruptcy attorneys donating their time and resources, ABC helps the impoverished obtain the financial fresh start they need through education, debt relief assistance, and bankruptcy.
Tickets for the charity event are $35 in advance and $45 at the door. To purchase tickets or become a sponsor for the event, contact:
