Brinks attorney moderates panel on Vincent Chin case

Lawrence G. (L.G.) Almeda, a shareholder in the Ann Arbor office of Brinks Hofer Gilson & Lione participated in an event sponsored by the American Citizens for Justice (ACJ) on June 23rd called 'The 30th Year Remembrance of Vincent Chin.' The event, held in conjunction with the Association of Chinese Americans at the Chinese Community Center in Madison Heights, Michigan, recalled the 1982 murder of Detroiter Vincent Chin. The Vincent Chin case ultimately led to national legal milestone change on issues dealing with hate crimes, minimum sentence guidelines and victims' rights, and spurred the formation of ACJ. Almeda, chair of the nanotechnology group at Brinks and a leader in Michigan's Asian American community, is a past president of ACJ. He served as a panel moderator at the June 23rd event on the topic, "How did the Chin case affect the law and framing of the issues of today?" Almeda is the chair of the State Advisory Committee of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights and a commissioner of the Michigan Asian Pacific American Affairs Commission. At Brinks, Mr. Almeda focuses his practice on patent opinions and prosecution in the medical, chemical, nanotechnology and mechanical arts, with an emphasis on medical devices, nanomaterials, micro and nanodevices, petroleum and chemical processes, polymers, fuel cells, hybrid engines and polycarbonate glazing systems.
