Stacia Buchanan leads Ingham County Bar Association

By Roberta M. Gubbins Legal News For the past 117 years the Ingham County Bar Association has provided valuable services to its members and this year, under the leadership of Stacia Buchanan, that tradition will carry on. Because a recent member survey indicated the membership wanted to focus on education and networking, "we will continue to provide quality educational opportunities and networking events," she said. "We put so many new events into play in the last two years that I do not see any new events. We will work to make our recently added events beneficial and sustainable for our membership." The ICBA sponsors such events as: o Second Annual Lawyers Got Talent held in April and now available on CD o The Bench-Bar Conference on Oct 6th bringing the bench and bar together to discuss and solve issues. o The Annual Awards Dinner held on Nov. 7th recognizing the many accomplished lawyers in Ingham County. o Monthly section meetings providing educational opportunities for members. o Meet the Judges event, which brought judges and lawyers together in a social setting "was a huge success. We are currently deciding between annual or biannual occurrences. The organization's "partnership with Cooley Law School for mentoring continues," she said. " However, new members are encouraged to attend events to network. Mentorship is a relationship that can be born anytime, especially out of a connection made at a social or educational event." In answer to questions Buchanan said, What is your idea of a perfect day? "A perfect day begins with a morning run, then a huge meal to refuel on the deck, a siesta, and a movie." What would surprise people about your job? "I am one of only three women who are appointed to (represent clients charged with) life offenses in Ingham County. I take great pride in being one of the few willing to help indigent persons accused of such serious offenses. " What is your favorite book? "I read frequently, but it takes me forever to finish a book. I do not have a favorite, but I enjoyed all the Harry Potter books as well as The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett." If you could have lunch with three people living or dead, who would they be? "R.E. Olds, a very distant relative of mine and historical figure dear to this area. Rosa Parks, so brave to stand up (or stay seated) for the rights of minorities. President Obama." Buchanan earned her Bachelor of Arts degree at Oakland University and her JD at Michigan State University-Detroit College of Law, graduating in 2003. She has maintained her law practice, Buchanan Law Office, PLLC in Lansing since 2007. She represents clients in criminal and family law matters.
