Lottery winner sentenced in landlord's slaying

DETROIT (AP) -- A Detroit lottery winner has been sentenced to 20 to 35 years in prison for the shooting death of his daughter's landlord. The Wayne County prosecutor's office says Freddie Young appeared Wednesday in circuit court. Young was convicted last month on one count of second-degree murder and using a firearm during a felony in the May 2011 slaying of 45-year-old Gregory McNichol. Authorities say McNichol was arguing with Young's adult daughter about two months of unpaid rent when he was shot to death outside the building he owned. Young's lottery club shared a $46.5 million jackpot in February 2011. Each member was to have received about $1.6 million through a cash payout. A judge temporarily froze Young's money after McNichol's widow filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Young. Published: Fri, Aug 3, 2012
