Commercial Law focus of MDTC annual meeting

The Michigan Defense Trial Counsel (MDTC) will host its 2012 Winter Meeting on Friday, Nov. 2, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the The Baronette Renaissance, 27790 Novi Road in Novi. This year's meeting is titled "Developments in Commercial Law that Every Litigator Should Know." Topics to be covered at the meeting will include: * "Common Interest and Joint Defense Agreements: Benefits, Pitfalls, and Best Practices" with Matthew P. Allen of Miller Canfield, Kevin A. Fanning of Clark Hill, and Daniel W. Linna Jr. of Honigman, Miller, Schwartz, & Cohn LLP. * "What Commercial Litigators Need to Know About Bankruptcy" with U.S. Bankruptcy Court Judge Phillip J. Shefferly, Eastern District of Michigan, and Judy B. Calton of Honigman. * "An Introduction and Overview of Business Courts" with Diane L. Akers of Bodman. * "Business Courts: A View from the Bench" with Macomb County Circuit Court Chief Judge Pro Tem John C. Foster, Diane L. Akers of Bodman, Oakland County Circuit Court Chief Judge Nanci J. Grant, and Kent County Circuit Court Judge Christopher P. Yates. During the luncheon, the 2012 Respected Advocate Awards will be presented to Katherine Smith Kennedy (MAJ recipient) of Pinsky, Smith, Fayette, & Kennedy LLP; and Laurel F. McGiffert (MDTC recipient) of Plunkett Cooney. The first annual Judicial Award will be presented to Michigan Supreme Court Justice Marilyn Kelly. Cost for the meeting is $210 for MDTC members, $235 for non-members, $75 for luncheon only, and $285 for a new member special (cost of meeting and one year of membership).
