Judge orders Troy to hold May election to replace recalled mayor

TROY (AP) -- An Oakland County judge has ordered Troy officials to hold an election in May to choose a replacement for the Detroit suburb's recalled mayor. Michigan Secretary of State Ruth Johnson sued the city, saying City Clerk Aileen Bittner failed to meet a deadline for an election. Johnson's suit sought to compel Troy to hold the special election in February. Judge Denise Langford-Morris instead ordered Wednesday that the election be held in May because deadlines for an earlier vote already have passed. Troy residents voted Nov. 6 to remove Janice Daniels as mayor of the city of 80,000. Recall backers accused her of making anti-gay remarks and damaging the city by opposing a federally funded transit center. Published: Fri, Dec 14, 2012
