Two commissioners push for more gun scrutiny

PONTIAC (AP) -- Two Oakland County commissioners are calling for better monitoring of gun purchases and improved mental health services to keep weapons from dangerously mentally ill people. Resolutions expected to be offered Wednesday by Republican Bill Dwyer and Democrat Marcia Gershenson urge Michigan to share more information with a federal government database each time a person buys a handgun or a long gun. Michigan's gun sellers currently contact the National Instant Criminal Background Check System when gun purchases are made. Michigan also uses a statewide check for handgun permits, including a criminal background check, but that information is not forwarded to the NICS. The Detroit Free Press says a second resolution proposes a study group to determine better ways to keep weapons out of the hands of those prone to violence. Published: Thu, Jan 24, 2013
