Sentence likely means no release for bank robber

DETROIT (AP) -- A man convicted of directing a drug addict to rob four Detroit-area banks has been sentenced to 45 years in prison. It's the third time since the 1990s that Arthur Payton has been convicted of bank robbery, a criminal record that enhanced his sentence. The government says he's spent 18 of the last 20 years in prison. The 45-year-old Payton got his latest punishment last Thursday from a Port Huron federal judge. The robberies occurred in Wayne and Oakland counties in 2011. The woman who carried out the robberies says she was dropped off near banks and told to pass a threatening note to the teller. In a court filing, federal prosecutor Doug Salzenstein said Payton deserved an extraordinary sentence because he "cannot stop and will not stop" robbing banks. Published: Mon, Feb 11, 2013
