Kiwanis Park to dedicate flagpole on June 14
Flag Day will be a little more special this year at Jackson's Kiwanis Park.
The park, renovated last year through a partnership between the Kiwanis Club of Jackson and the City of Jackson, will host a dedication of its new flagpole at noon on Flag Day, Friday, June 14 at the park on the corner of North Elm Avenue and Blakely Street.
The festivities are open to the public and will include a flag-raising ceremony by the Jackson County American Legion Ritual Team, some short remarks, and echo Taps, played by two Jackson High School trumpeters. Following the ceremony, participants are invited to stay for a hot-dog lunch.
The first flag to fly over the park draped the coffin of a longtime Kiwanis member, Vernon Brown, a Korean War veteran, who died in 2010; his widow, Caroline, also is a member of the club.
The flagpole project was funded by a Kiwanis member, the club and its foundation. It is dedicated to members of the Kiwanis Club of Jackson who served in the U.S. Armed Forces. Kiwanis Park, at N. Elm Avenue and Blakely Street, features a grand entrance, pavilion, lighting, picnic tables, grills, a walking path and playground equipment.
Kiwanis Club of Jackson was founded in 1918 and has nearly 90 members.
