Judge goes tough on man with long criminal record
HOWELL (AP) -- A West Michigan man with more than 50 criminal convictions on his record is getting a stretch behind bars in his latest case.
Livingston County Circuit Court Judge Michael P. Hatty last Thursday sentenced Nathaniel Wallace to 5 1/2 years to 15 years in prison for larceny from a building.
The Livingston County Daily Press & Argus of Howell reports the Grand Rapids man promised that the judge wouldn't see him again if he could avoid prison.
Hatty said he exceeded guidelines of up to 34 months in prison in part due to the "sheer amount" of prior convictions, which included attempted retail fraud and resisting police. Wallace was convicted in a bench trial of larceny for tricking a Pinckney gas station clerk out of $98 in September.
