Pontiac teachers sue on health coverage, finances

PONTIAC (AP) -- Teachers in the cash-strapped Pontiac school district are suing after being told they may lose health coverage because of nearly $12 million in unpaid premiums. The Oakland Press of Pontiac reports the Pontiac Education Association says in a recent Oakland County Circuit Court lawsuit that money taken out of paychecks was put into the Pontiac School District's general fund to make district finances look better. School officials had no immediate comment. Health coverage could end July 31 for 350 workers, including teachers and their families. Gov. Rick Snyder recently named six people to a team to review the finances of the district, a step that could lead to the appointment of an emergency manager or other measures.
