Council seeks repeal of 'stand your ground' law
ANN ARBOR (AP) -- Ann Arbor City Council is asking the state Legislature to repeal Michigan's "stand your ground" law in the wake of Florida neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman's acquittal in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin.
AnnArbor.com reported a resolution making the request passed 10-1 last Thursday night.
Michigan's self-defense law was passed in 2006 and signed by then-Gov. Jennifer Granholm, a Democrat.
Democrats introduced legislation last year to repeal the law after Martin's death, but it went nowhere. One lawmaker has recently said he wants a review of the law.
A jury acquitted George Zimmerman last month of second-degree murder and manslaughter charges in the 2012 slaying of the unarmed 17-year-old in Sanford, Fla.
