Ex-official in voucher scheme gets year in prison
DETROIT (AP) -- A 42-year-old former housing official has been given a year in prison in a Detroit bribery case.
The U.S. Attorney's office in Detroit says Angela Reed was sentenced last Thursday by U.S. District Judge Abele Cook.
Reed pleaded guilty in November to conspiracy to accept bribes and make false claims to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
She had worked with the Michigan State Housing Development Authority as a waiting list coordinator for HUD's Homeless Assistance Recovery Program. The housing subsidy program gave the homeless preference for receiving vouchers for rental homes or apartments.
Authorities say Reed and four convicted co-defendants received cash kickbacks from people who fraudulently received the vouchers.
