What’s the best thing about being retired? More time for family and friends, music, theatre and nature.
My mother always told me … Be nice to everyone.
What is your most treasured material possession?
Binoculars.
What advice do you have for someone considering law school? Consider Toledo as well as Michigan schools; don’t think that your job choices are limited to actually being a lawyer.
If you weren’t a lawyer, what would you be? Exactly what I am—a former lawyer who likes to start things.
Favorite local hangouts: Anywhere good music is being played.
Your proudest moment(s) as a bar executive? Connecting lawyers.
What would surprise people about your job? The variety of things I do.
What’s your greatest achievement? Starting things: Founding the volunteer department at St. Joe; hiring the first paid executive at Ann Arbor Civic Theatre; being the first paid executive director of the Washtenaw County Bar Association; being the first community director at University Commons.
What would you say to your 16-year-old self? Be more serious about school.
What one thing do you wish people knew about your work? How much I enjoyed—treasured—all the people associated with each of my positions.
Favorite joke: Since I don’t remember them, whatever one you tell me.
What is something most people don't know about you? My two best trips: a week rafting on the Colorado River and a week whale-watching on the Sea of Cortez.
If you could have dinner with three people, living or dead, who would they be? Any of my parents and grandparents—I have so many questions for them
Favorite movie: “Dr. Zhivago.”
Favorite law-related movie: “The Shawshank Redemption.”
Favorite place to spend money: Any place good music is being played or good plays are being presented.
What is your motto? Be kind and enjoy life
Where would you like to be when you're 90? Right where I am now.
