Feds will oppose lower bond for cancer doc

DETROIT (AP) -- Federal prosecutors say they'll continue to oppose a cancer doctor's efforts to get out of jail while awaiting trial on fraud charges. Dr. Farid Fata wants his bond reduced to $500,000 from $9 million. But prosecutors fear he'll flee to his native country, Lebanon. They say they're still trying to sort out his extensive finances. The next hearing is Wednesday in Detroit federal court. Fata, an Oakland County resident, is accused of misdiagnosing patients and ordered unnecessary treatments to enrich himself through Medicare and other insurance programs. The government says some patients were repeatedly exposed to powerful drugs despite having no cancer. Separately, prosecutors are asking a judge to allow notices in Detroit-area newspapers to keep Fata's many patients informed. Published: Mon, Sep 30, 2013
