Forty groups to help state, city rehab Belle Isle
DETROIT (AP) -- Michigan and Detroit officials say at least 40 groups have pledged support for the rehabilitation of Belle Isle, the Detroit River island park that is becoming part of the state parks system.
Officials gathered on the island Tuesday to launch the effort, called "All in for Belle Isle."
The 982-acre park will open Feb. 10 as Michigan's 102nd state park.
Michigan Department of Natural Resources Director Keith Creagh says crews already are identifying and cutting down dead and diseased trees, grinding fallen logs and clearing brush from island paths.
The state takeover of the park will save the bankrupt city an estimated $6 million annually. Michigan's budget sets aside $2.5 million to manage the park.
Vehicles must have an $11 annual state park pass to enter.
