Meeting to take a look at alternative careers with a law degree, March 11

What is the value of a law degree outside of a traditional legal career? With looming debt and limited positions, what types of options are available to a fresh law school graduate that are not within a law firm? What are the options for someone who has practiced law but would like to make a change in careers? Anyone with questions like these can get answers at the next Wolverine Bar Association meeting on "Alternative Legal Careers" on Tuesday, March 11, beginning at 6 p.m. at the Detroit offices of Bodman PLC at Ford Field, 1901 St. Antoine Street, 6th floor. The meeting will feature a panel to discuss "alternative" paths in the law. Attendees will hear why the panelists decided to practice in an alternative legal career, how they entered that particular career, and a discussion on the positives/pitfalls of an unconventional type of work. The panel includes: * Markeisha Miner, assistant dean of Career Services and Outreach, University of Detroit Mercy School of Law. * Nancy Newman, president of Newman Hawkins Legal Search, a legal recruitment firm. * Lesley Redwine, CEO and superintendent of New Urban Learning, a charter management organization in Detroit. * Joelynn Stokes, ordained elder of the African Methodist Episcopal Church and member of the ministerial staff at Bethel AME Church in Detroit The meeting is free and open to the public.
