Seminar looks at Veterans Treatment Courts

The Federal Bar Association Federal Disability Benefits Committee will be presenting a seminar on Veterans Treatment Courts (VTC) on Tuesday, April 29. It will be held in Room 115 at the Theodore Levin U.S. Courthouse, 231 W. Lafayette Blvd, in Detroit, from 1:30 to 4 p.m. The purpose of VTC is to provide assistance to military veterans who have honorably served in the armed forces of the United States. The VTC assists veterans who have become involved in the criminal justice system using a team approach that attempts to get beyond the legal problems to address the underlying physical, psychological, and substance abuse issues that may have resulted in criminal conduct. Successful completion of the program may result in a reduced plea, reduction in sentence. The seminar will feature experts regarding VTCs including judges who have established and implemented VTCs in state circuit and district courts. They include Macomb County Circuit Court Judge Mark Switalski and Macomb County 41B District Court Judge Carrie Fuca. Also slated to speak is: Nanette Colling and Tracy Galliday-Champagne, Veterans Justice Outreach coordinators from the Department of Veterans Affairs; Gail Pamukov-Miller, immediate past president of the Macomb County Bar Association; and John E Walus. This seminar will provide a "lessons learned" approach to the establishment and operation of VTCs. Besides the judges' presentations on their respective courts, additional topics covered include: current and projected VA perspective; evolving role of the defense attorney; 501(c)(3); and the Mentor Program. Additional courts are being established throughout the state and this seminar offers an opportunity to become informed regarding this invaluable tool used to assist veterans.
