State plans stepped-up drunken driving patrols

LANSING (AP) - Law enforcement officials in Michigan are stepping up patrols aimed at stopping drunken drivers over the next two weeks. Events Tuesday at Comerica Park in Detroit and Cooley Law School Stadium in Lansing kicked off the Fourth of July period crackdown. Police officers, sheriff's deputies and state troopers around the state are working on the federally funded patrols. The crackdown will involve nearly 150 agencies in 26 counties, including Allegan, Berrien, Calhoun, Chippewa, Delta, Eaton, Genesee, Grand Traverse, Houghton, Ingham, Jackson, Kalamazoo, Kent, Livingston, Macomb, Marquette, Monroe, Muskegon, Oakland, Ottawa, Saginaw, St. Clair, Van Buren, Washtenaw, Wayne, and Wexford. During last year's Fourth of July crackdown, the state says 115 motorists were arrested for drunken driving as a result of extra patrols. Published: Thu, Jul 03, 2014
