State Bar presents 'Franchise Law Update 2014'

The Antitrust, Franchising & Trade Regulation Section of the State Bar of Michigan's Franchise Practitioners Group will host a complimentary, educational session, "Franchise Law Update 2014: Labor & Employment," on Friday, Oct. 24, from 8:30 a.m. to noon to discuss recent labor and employment developments and their potential impact on franchisors and franchisees. The session will feature guest speakers Dean Heyl, vice president for state government relations, public policy and tax for the International Franchise Association (Washington, D.C.) and George Ward, adjunct professor of franchise law at Wayne State University Law School. The guest speakers will also participate in the panel discussion featuring industry experts and franchisees and moderated by Brain Witus, a partner at Jaffe, Raitt, Heuer, & Weiss PC. Panel topics include vicarious franchisor liability, including the NLRB's General Counsel's recent directive that McDonald's may be considered a "joint employer" with its franchisees, recent court decisions, minimum wage and overtime, and other issues. "While the franchise industry continues to grow, it faces important changes and challenges on the labor and employment front that could greatly impact franchisors, franchisees and franchise systems," said Derek McLeod, chairperson of the State Bar of Michigan's Antitrust, Franchising & Trade Regulation Section. "The Franchise Practitioners Group aimed to convene a diverse group of speakers to address timely and relevant matters that will help franchisors and franchisees navigate the issues currently under debate in the state legislatures, in the courts and in the public arena." The session is closed to members of the media, but open to franchisors, franchisees, franchise lawyers, labor and employment lawyers, business lawyers, including in-house counsel, HR professionals, law students, and law professors. The update will take place at the offices of Jaffe, Raitt, Heuer, & Weiss PC, 27777 Franklin Road, Suite 2500, in Southfield.
