Ann Arbor City Club to host U-M Law professor Rebecca Scott on Nov. 19

The Ann Arbor City Club, 1830 Washtenaw Ave., Ann Arbor, will host a dinner presentation, 6 to 7:30 p.m., Nov. 19, featuring University of Michigan law professor and author Rebecca J. Scott. The Charles Gibson Distinguished University Professor of History, Scott is co-director of the Law in Slavery and Freedom Project. She teaches a course in the U-M Law School on civil rights and the boundaries of citizenship in historical perspective, as well as a seminar on the law in slavery and freedom. Her most recent book, coauthored with Jean M. Hébrard, is "Freedom Papers: An Atlantic Odyssey in the Age of Emancipation." It traces one family's interaction with law and official documents across five generations, from West Africa to the Americas to Europe. "Freedom Papers" was awarded the 2012 Albert Beveridge Book Award in American History and the James Rawley Book Prize in Atlantic History, both from the American Historical Association. The book was also awarded the 2013 Chinard Prize from the Society for French Historical Studies and the Institut Français d'Amerique. On Monday, Dec. 1, the Club will host Ann Arbor's new mayor, Christopher Taylor, who will talk about his life and work leading up to this new job. The event is 7:30 to 9:00 a.m., and is a breakfast buffet; it costs $20 for non-members (reservations required). Everyone is invited. The club will host a lunch presentation, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 3, when Terrence J. MacDonald, director of the Bentley Historical Library in Ann Arbor, will share "(At Least) Ten Things You Don't Know About the History of U-M" The club's Annual Arts & Crafts Festival and Holiday Greens Market is slated for 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 6, a juried show with special artistry as well as affordable gifts. Attendees are invited to wander about the historic building, visit with artists, and get holiday shopping done. All these events are open to the public.
