The Oakland County Family-Focused Juvenile Drug Court presented “Self-Exploration Through Art” on Tuesday, Feb. 10, on the second floor of the Sixth Judicial Circuit Court in Pontiac. Works of art created by Juvenile Drug Court participants were unveiled for the first time at this event.  Among the art afficionados at the event were (left to right) Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Mary Ellen Brennan who provided remarks at the event, Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Lisa Langton, juvenile caseworker Nate Gilling, Megan Wentz, Marty Alvin of Oakland County Family Court, and Drug Treatment Court Supervisor Jackie Howes-Evanson. “We are here with our annual art therapy presentation,” said Brennan who presides over the Juvenile Drug Court. “In the art therapy, the kids explore the therapeutic impact that art can have as far as getting an understanding of what got them to where they are and what changes need to be made so that their lives look like the way they want their lives to look.” The Juvenile Drug Court program is designed to address the problem of substance abuse for eligible youth in the Oakland County juvenile justice system. Participants of the Juvenile Drug Court took part in a seven-week art therapy program designed to provide insight into the therapeutic aspects of art as a means of self-exploration. “This is one of my favorite nights because the by-product of all their work is the beautiful art that we get to enjoy tonight,” Brennan added.
