Rosie Marlatt originally planned to go to law school – but after graduating from college, was attracted to a career niche as a paralegal.
She has worked in the legal field for seven years, but for the past year and a half, she has worked as a paralegal at JK Winters in East Lansing, an AV rated law firm with practice arrears in estate planning, business law, intellectual property, corporate law, real estate, employment and litigation.
Marlatt graduated in 2008 with an associates of Applied Business Degree in Paralegal studies from RETS College.
“I enjoyed my professors – it was beneficial to be taught by individuals that were also in the legal field,” she says.
Her work at JK Winters includes legal research; drafting documents such as pleadings, motions, letters, discovery; scheduling court hearings; filing documents with the court, meeting with clients, answering phones, and scheduling appointments.
“I enjoying helping others, I find it rewarding,” she says. “There’s always something new that I’m learning.”
In May 2014, Marlatt joined NALS of Lansing, the local chapter of a national association for legal professionals, after hearing about it from NALS member Jessica Garber, a paralegal/legal assistant at Fahey Schultz Burzych Rhodes who currently serves as chapter treasurer.
Marlatt was nominated and elected as the 2015-2016 Lansing Chapter Secretary this past May.
“I enjoy spending time with other professional paralegals and feel honored to serve as the Secretary,” she says.
Her favorite chapter social event to date was a trip to the Lansing Lugnuts baseball game; while a Winter Warm-Up Seminar on Mental Health Courts ranked as her top education event.
Marlatt will volunteer at the Chapter’s second annual rummage sale fund-raiser Saturday, Aug. 8, at Fahey, Schultz, Burzych, & Rhodes in Okemos.
All proceeds will go towards the organization’s Scholarship Account, and unsold items will be donated to local nonprofit charities.
“I’m looking forward to serving the community,” she says.
A native of Nashville, Mich., a small town in Barry County west of Lansing, Marlatt is a 2001 graduate of Maple Valley High School. She now makes her home in Charlotte, with Andrew, her husband of three years, their dog, Tucker, and cat, Sylvester. She and her husband attend a local church, and in their leisure time, enjoy hunting.
“This is my time to go out in the woods and enjoy the beauty of God’s creations and, of course, wait for the big buck,” she says.
Marlatt is also a big sports fan.
“I work in East Lansing and when I’m not rooting for the Ohio State Buckeyes, I root for the Spartans,” she says.
