Lecture to look at quest to recover, restore, and return concert recordings

Western Michigan University Cooley Law School graduates Andrew Acker, Jeffrey Butler, and Charles Dadswell will share their quest to recover, restore and return the famous lost "Betty Board" concert recordings to their rightful owners -Betty Cantor Jackson, the Grateful Dead and Warner Music Group - during the 12th Annual Howard Soifer Memorial Lecture in Sports and Entertainment Law. The event will be held at WMU-Cooley's Lansing campus on Friday, April 13, at noon. Betty Cantor Jackson was a sound board operator for Grateful Dead, thus the name "Betty Board" recordings, who spent close to 20 years recording hundreds of hours of tape with the band. In the mid-'80s, she put most of her possessions, including more than a thousand reels of tape from the Grateful Dead and other groups, in a storage unit. When she was unable to keep current on the fees, her things were auctioned off. Acker is founding member "A" of ABCD Enterprises LLC and the sole member of Reel 2 Real Consulting LLC. He practices law with Storino, Ramello, & Durkin Attorneys at Law in Rosemont, Illinois, and focuses his practice in the area of municipal law. Butler is founding member "B" of ABCD Enterprises LLC and the sole member of Spy Dog Consulting LLC. He practices education law for Clark Hill in Lansing and has experience representing public schools and other educational institutions, including Title IX and disability law matters. Dadswell is founding member "D" of ABCD Enterprises LLC and the sole member of Close Call Consulting LLC. He is senior vice president and general counsel for a Nasdaq 100 Corporation in California and resides in La Jolla, California. Previous Soifer Memorial Lecture speakers have been T.J. Duckett, former running back in the National Football League; Tom Izzo, Michigan State University men's basketball coach; Kevin Poston, president and CEO of Detroit-area based DEAL Elite Athletic Management; Steve Smith, broadcaster and former NBA all-star basketball player; and Steve Garvey, former Major League Baseball all-star and MVP. Soifer (19492003) was a 1977 graduate of WMU-Cooley. He was an avid sports fan and represented several prominent professional athletes during his career as a shareholder with Loomis, Ewert, Parsley, Davis, & Gotting PC. Soifer was grateful for his legal education at WMU-Cooley Law School and his family, friends and partners have endowed the lecture series in his memory.
