The Oakland County Bar Association will present “Litigation in Probate Court: Practice Tips for the Unwary” on Tuesday, Jan. 22, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the OCBA offices in Bloomfield Hills.
Presenting at the program will be Oakland County Probate Court Chief Judge Kathleen A. Ryan, Elizabeth L. Luckenbach of Dickinson Wright PLLC, and Thomas Van Dusen of Bodman. They will discuss the unique world of litigation practice in the probate court. Specifically, the panel will address probate court jurisdiction, case initiation, service of process, discovery, pre-trial motion practice, and trial techniques.
Other topics of discussion will include:
• The difference between a proceeding and a civil action, and who can initiate a civil action.
• Manner and method of service and defining interested parties.
• Chapter 5 limitations on discovery.
• Applying the general rules of civil procedure.
