Local law school's graduate employment rate of 91% surpasses national average

University of Detroit Mercy School of Law 2020 graduate employment rate surpasses the national average, with graduates securing employment in a variety of positions, including at top law firms, in competitive judicial clerkships, and in government, business, and public interest organizations.

Each year, Detroit Mercy Law supports graduates with securing employment and is required to report the employment outcomes of graduates as of ten months following graduation to the American Bar Association (ABA).  For the graduating class of 2020, Detroit Mercy Law surpassed the national average for securing full-time, long-term legal employment. According to the ABA employment summary, 88 percent of 2020 Detroit Mercy Law graduates secured full-time, long-term legal employment, compared to 77 percent of 2020 law graduates nationwide. The graduating class of 2020 secured an overall employment rate of 91 percent in legal positions.

“We are dedicated to assisting our students from the beginning of their legal careers during their first year and are here for as long as they need us,” said Tanya Lundberg, assistant dean of Career Services. “We are proud of all the different types of employment our graduates secure after graduating from Detroit Mercy Law.”

The Detroit Mercy Law employment outcomes include graduates of the Canadian & American Dual JD Program, offered in partnership with University of Windsor Faculty of Law.  Detroit Mercy Law is the only ABA-accredited law school that offers a three-year, cross-border, comparative Dual JD program in which graduates earn both a U.S. and Canadian JD and are eligible to pursue licensure in both the U.S. and Canada.

Graduates pursuing licensure in Canada are required to complete post-graduation experiential training, which is similar to an apprenticeship, before they are admitted to practice law. Of the 2020 Detroit Mercy Law and Windsor Law Dual JD graduates, 96 percent secured articling, Law Practice Program, or attorney positions.
