ALA discussing 'Unconscious Bias' at live event on July 22

The Association of Legal Administrators, Metropolitan Detroit Chapter, will host the Center for Automotive Diversity, Inclusion & Advancement presenting a conversation on “Unconscious Bias” on Thursday, July 22, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Pinky’s Rooftop located at 100 S. Main St. in Royal Oak. Speaking at the conversational presentation will be Cheryl Thompson and Margaret Baxter of the Center for Automotive Diversity, Inclusion & Advancement (CADIA, www.automotivediversity.org).

The human brain receives 11 million pieces of information every second yet people can only process 40 of those details consciously. This makes everyone’s responses to everyday interactions and situations mostly unconscious. This how the human brain has evolved to deal with the world’s complex environment; but it means people don’t realize just how unconscious or biased they can be. By understanding that everyone is biased, people can become more aware of their thoughts and actions when relating to others.

Thompson is the founder of CADIA which supports diversity, equity and inclusion for the automotive industry by providing professional development for individuals, along with resources, programs and tools that drive organizational evolution.

Baxter is the executive director for CADIA. She runs CADIA’s day-to-day operations and helps develop tools, offerings, and resources to accelerate the pace of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the automotive industry.

In addition, ALA is supporting Elli’s House 313 which is a non-profit organization focused on helping young girls and women of Detroit who have run away from home or found themselves involved in human trafficking. Elli’s House 313 is involved with the reunification of families, caring support, education, outreach and also provides snacks and meals during street outreach and has a residential program for those without housing. ALA would like to provide these young girls and women with flip flops and leggings for the summer.  ALA will be collecting flip flops of all sizes and colors as well as leggings in size medium or large. Donations will be collected at the July 22 meeting.
