ABA Section of Intellectual Property Law to host fall conference, Sept. 28-30

The American Bar Association Section of Intellectual Property Law will host its annual 2021 IP Fall Institute Tuesday throught Thursday, September 28-30. The three-day virtual CLE program brings together expert speakers to discuss such topics as autonomous vehicles, digital health technologies and digital content streaming, among others.

Keynote speaker Stephen Lee, chief intellectual property counsel for the Target Corporation in  Minneapolis, Minnesota, will participate in a conversation with Section Chair Kim R. Jessum on Wednesday from 3-4 p.m. EDT.

Program highlights include:

• “Tracking IT All: IP and Data Privacy and Security Issues for Digital Health Technologies” (Tuesday, 4:30-5:30 p.m.) — Digital health technologies have the power to transform the delivery of health care, while also pushing the boundaries of intellectual property, data, patient privacy and information security laws and regulations. The panelists will explore core issues at the heart of where these topics intersect.

• “Driving Forward with Autonomous Vehicles and IP” (Wednesday, 4:30-6 p.m.) — Rapid advancements in autonomous and connected vehicle technology promise to disrupt and transform the automotive space. A key feature of autonomous vehicles is V2X (vehicle-to-everything) communication, their need to communicate with other vehicles and also with their surroundings. To have reliable and efficient communications, technologies need to be compliant with standards, making standard-essential patents (SEP) and the licensing term of them particularly important. This program will discuss SEPs relating to autonomous vehicles, the licensing of SEPs and the role of patent pools.

• “IP Legal Issues Surrounding Streaming Digital Content” (Thursday, 4:30-5:30 p.m.) — Explore traditional streaming services such as Netflix, Spotify and Pandora and their role as intermediary between creators and their audiences. Panelists will examine various business and monetization models, as well as the distribution channels facilitated by these streaming services. In addition, the panel will examine current legal issues affecting the industry such as money laundering, managing content and rights of publicity.
