The American Bar Association launched its celebration of Law Day 2022 this month with a keynote address by Roberta Cooper Ramo, the first female president of the ABA.
The kickoff also featured a discussion about the Law Day theme, “Toward a More Perfect Union: The Constitution in Times of Change.”

Law Day is generally held on or around May 1 in schools and communities across the nation, but programs can be designed to last a month.
Ramo challenged lawyers and Law Day organizers around the nation on the Zoom presentation “in these historically challenging days,” to present experiences in person, online and in print that will give citizens the chance to review and reconnect with the Constitution.
She invited lawyers and organizations to focus on the words that are capitalized in the Preamble of the Constitution: People, Union, Justice, Tranquility, Welfare, Blessings of Liberty and Posterity.
“Our job is to be active as lawyers making sure that our democracy flourishes and that the people we are honored to represent flourish as well,” Ramo said.
The ABA officially recognizes Law Day programs that make an impact in the community.
Recently, the Supreme Court of Guam was recognized for creating a monthlong celebration, which included proclamations, fairy-tale mock trials for children, collegiate presidential lecture series, Law Week games, a law fair, media interviews, a 5K race and the creation of a justice patch program for the Girl Scouts in Guam.
The launch program previewed Law Day resources, including virtual tools such as social media graphics that can be downloaded and used for events, downloadable high school lesson plans and classroom activities, scripts for podcasts and sample proclamations for use with state or local governments, which are featured on www.lawday.org.
The National Law Day program, “Toward a More Perfect Union: The Constitution in Times of Change,” will be Thursday, April 28 at 3 p.m. EDT.
This program will cover moments of constitutional change in the United States, including constitutional amendments, social movements that lead to legislation and shifts in U.S. Supreme Court jurisprudence. Registration is available here.
In recognition of Law Day 2022, the ABA will unveil results from its fourth ABA Survey of Civic Literacy on Friday, April 29 at noon EDT, during a live online event.
The survey explores the public’s knowledge of the basics of American democracy, as well as attitudes toward legal issues including measures affecting voting rights and access.
