Oakland County has a new health officer. Oakland County County Executive Dave Coulter has appointed Calandra Green as the first woman of color to fill this key county role. Green, a registered nurse who was instrumental in the county’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, will oversee public health throughout the county.
“Calandra shares our vision for having public health rooted in the community,” Coulter said. “As we transition to a new phase of the pandemic, her knowledge, skills, and commitment are what we need to move public health forward to achieve our strategic goal of having healthy residents.”
Coulter’s strategic goal for healthy residents encompasses babies born healthy, improving access to health care for all, resources for community mental health, and ensuring the availability of services and programs for older adults.
Green joined Oakland County as a public health nurse in August 2019. As the pandemic began in March 2020, she became the Oakland County Health Division’s quality and process improvement supervisor. Her duties included serving as the COVID-19 school nurse liaison where she hired, trained and deployed 68 nurses to 28 public school districts and 125 private or charter schools. In May of 2021, she rose to administrator public health, developing and managing comprehensive countywide programs within public heath including organizing and developing mental health response both in Oxford and countywide in the aftermath of the Oxford High School shooting.
In the private sector, Green, then known as Calandra Anderson, worked for McLaren Health Care in Pontiac from 2007-2018 where she rose from manager of patient care services to vice president of patient care services and chief nursing officer. From 1993-2007, she worked for North Oakland Medical Centers in Pontiac, serving as manager of obstetrics and the neonatal intensive care unit from 2004-2007.
Green has four degrees and one certificate:
• Doctor of Education in Organizational Leadership, Oakland University
• Post-Masters Certificate in Lean Leadership, Oakland University
• Master of Business Administration, Baker College
• Bachelor of Health Services Administration, Baker College
• Associate of Nursing, Oakland Community College
In 2021, Oakland University recognized Green with the Nightingale Award for Excellence in Community Nursing. She replaces Leigh-Anne Stafford who continued to serve as health officer when she became director of Oakland County Health and Human Services.
