State’s top court OKs $100 increase in attorney dues

The cost of working as an attorney in Michigan will be going up by $100 later this year.

On Wednesday, the Michigan Supreme Court approved a 32 percent overall increase in dues that will take effect Oct. 1.

Lawyers will pay annual dues of $260 to the State Bar of Michigan, $140 to the attorney discipline system and $15 to the client protection fund.

In announcing the increase, Justice Elizabeth Welch said the $80 increase in State Bar dues — the first since 2003 — was necessary so that the organization could “continue the valuable services” it provides to its members.

Justice David Vivano said he agreed with the $20 increase dedicated to the attorney discipline system but thought the SBM hike was too much in light of ‘the current economic climate, when historically high inflation rates are affecting every household and business.”

Justice Brian Zahra said the $80 hike should have been spread out over a four-year period to ease “the sting of the significant dues increase” for State Bar members.

‘Lids for Kids’ fits 1,000 children with bike helmets

More than 1,000 children were equipped with new properly-fitting bicycle helmets during two ‘Lids for Kids’ events conducted recently by the Sinas Dramis Law Firm.

The free helmets were given at events in Lansing and Grand Rapids, which also featured raffles during which 48 bikes and scooters were distributed.

Since ‘Lids for Kids’ first began, more than 13,000 bike helmets have been distributed to Michigan children.

Sinas Dramis Law Firm Partners Tom and Stephen Sinas not that the events are about promoting bike safety in a fun way and trying to make the community a little bit safer.

“We see time and time again how much bike helmets help people when they're in a bike accident save themself from a brain injury,” said Stephen Sinas.

Tom Sinas added: “Trying to provide a fun atmosphere so that kids are excited about not only their summer, but excited about the idea of wearing their bike helmet.”
