Senators announce $1.5 billion investment to fix Michigan's roads and bridges

U.S. Senators Debbie Stabenow and Gary Peters on Thursday announced that Michigan will receive $1,567,824,375 from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act to fix crumbling roads and bridges across the state. The total funding will come through 11 formula programs that will rebuild our roads and bridges, reduce carbon emissions, and improve safety. The Act was signed into law on November 15, 2021.

“Thanks to the leadership of President Biden and his partnership with Congress, we are making the largest investment ever to fix our bridges and roads. It will transform how Michiganders get around the state and improve the safety of our bridges and roads for future generations. This funding is a game changer for Michigan and another critical piece of the investments in infrastructure coming to our state,” said Stabenow.

“This is a historic investment in our state’s infrastructure and will provide much-needed support for our roads, highways, and bridges while creating a network of new electric vehicle charging stations. I’m proud to have worked with Senator Stabenow and President Biden to pass the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which made this investment in Michigan’s future possible,” said Peters.

The historic investment includes funding for:

• Surface Transportation Block Grant Program: $370,580,350
• Highway Safety Improvement Program: $78,473,158
• Railway-Highway Crossings Program: $903,681
• Congestion Mitigation & Air Quality Improvement: $82,248,200
• Metropolitan Planning: $13,934,218
• National Highway Freight Program: $37,244,408
• Carbon Reduction Program: $33,043,414
• PROTECT Formula Program: $37,572,730
• Bridge Formula Program: $121,633,126
• National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Program: $23,442,593

Working with Republicans and Democrats, Stabenow and Peters were instrumental in passing the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. The Act includes funding to rebuild long-neglected roads and bridges, keep drinking water safe, bring high-speed internet to Michigan communities, invest in electric vehicles, modernize the Soo Locks, and make the largest single investment ever in the Great Lakes. The Act also strengthens the Buy American laws.
