The Negligence Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan and in partnership with several bar associations will present “Recognizing and Interrupting Microaggressions in the Workplace” on Thursday, March 9, from 1 to 6 p.m. at the MSU Management Education Center, 811 W. Square Lake Road in Troy.
This interactive session builds an understanding of microaggressions: what they are, where they come from, different types of microaggressions, how they make people feel, and how to interrupt them when we see or experience them. Through interactive lectures and small group breakout sessions, the special event will explore common microaggressions experienced by women who are marginalized across gender, race, ethnicity, disability, LGBTQIA+, religion, age, and other intersectional identities. Attendees will learn how to call people in to interrupt microaggressions and support colleagues who are impacted. In small group work, participants will put tools and scripts they have learned into practice. At the end of the session, the group will make commitments to one another to continue practicing and taking action.
Speaking at the program will by Melinda Briana Epler, a nationally recognized expert who wrote the book “How to Be An Ally: Actions you Can Take for a Stronger, Happier Workplace.” She also has a popular TED Talk and podcast called “Leading With Empathy & Allyship.”
The workshop will be followed by a panel discussion. A social hour with light appetizers, wine, and mocktails will conclude the program. The first 50 to register will receive a copy of Epler’s book.
The cost to attend is $250 for attorneys, $25 for judges, and $125 for new lawyers and law firm employees. To register for the program, visit www.eventbrite.com/e/microaggression-in-the-workplace-tickets-482469207387.
