The inaugural Raze Smoqa event took place April 10 at Saints Peter and Paul Jesuit Church in Detroit. Presented by the Chaldean American Law Student Association and the Chaldean American Bar Association, the event served as the Chaldean adaptation of the Red Mass tradition, “a ceremony seeking the Holy Spirit’s guidance for wisdom and the pursuit of justice,” according to Tina Toma, a third-year student at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law. The event also was highlighted by a posthumous tribute to attorney Clarence Dass, who was accorded a Lifetime Achievement Award for his “exceptional contributions to the Chaldean community and the legal profession,” Toma said. Dass died in 2022 at age 36 after a lengthy battle with cancer. Among the members of the judiciary on hand for the ceremony were (above, left to right) Zina Ashourian, a federal supervisory administrative law judge for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services; Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Yasmine Poles; and Oakland County 48th District Court Judge Diane Dickow D’Agostini.
