While the Climax Township Board held a special meeting without electricity July 31, the board was able to quickly review and unanimously approve Road Millage ballot language for the November general election.
There was a power outage before the board met July 31, however natural daylight allowed the board to take care of routine business.
While the Township Board is scheduled to hold a regular meeting August 13 at 7 p.m., a special meeting was necessary because the ballot language must be submitted to the Kalamazoo County Clerk and Register of Deeds office by 4 p.m., August 13.
The Road Millage ballot language is similar to a proposal approved by Climax Township voters 10 years ago. The 1-mill road millage proposal that was reduced to .9790 mills by the required millage roll back, will ask Climax Township voters to renew and increase back up to the original voted 1.0 mills ($1.00 per $1,000 taxable value) to be levied for a period of 10 years (2025-2034) with revenue dedicated for maintaining and improving existing public secondary roads within the Township. If approved, it is estimated the millage will raise an estimated $99,358 in the first year of the levy.
The power outage gave the Township barely a day to enjoy the new digital sign that was installed outside of the Township Hall by Burkett Signs and hooked up by local electrician Don Cochran.
The Township Board approved an estimate of $18,725 from Burkett Signs for the digital sign at its April 9 meeting. The new digital sign was installed in the location an old sign board was located. American Rescue Plan Act funds were used for the purchase.
