The Oakland County Combat Veterans Treatment Court conducted a ceremony for its eighth graduating class on Tuesday, December 10, in Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Nanci Grant’s courtroom at the Oakland County Courthouse in Pontiac. On hand for the ceremony were (left to right) Blaine Welmers, Judge Grant, Nicholas Calvert, and Tanya Hill of Warriors Trust Fund. Grant created the Oakland County Combat Veterans Treatment Court in 2013. It is the state’s only Combat Veterans Treatment Court. The goal of this specialty court is to reach Oakland County combat veterans who have been charged with criminal offenses related to traumatic experiences suffered in combat, conflict, or military sexual assault while serving the country. First responders involved with search and rescue operations or recovery missions are also eligible for the CVTC. The program focuses on the unique issues faced by veterans and includes extensive mentoring with military veterans who can relate to the participants’ combat experiences.
