The Zeeland boys swimming team defeated Jenison 101-76 in a dual meet Jan. 7 at the Zeeland natatorium.
Senior Owen Stevens won two individual events and swam on two winning relay teams to lead Zeeland to the win. Stevens won the 50 freestyle in 22.26 seconds and the 500 freestyle in 4:37.34, the latter nearly a full minute faster than his nearest competitor. Both times were state Division 1 meet qualifying times.
Zeeland also swept all three relay events. In the 200 medley relay, the team of Gibson Meyering, Andrew Skaggs, Stevens and Will Posthumus swam a state-qualifying time of 1:38.75. The 200 freestyle relay team of Carson Durham, Max Plaggemars, Hudson Kosten and Meyering was first to the finish line in 1:35.43. In the 400 freestyle relay, Eli Elders, Stevens, Posthumus and Kosten took first in 3:27.15.
Kosten won the 200 freestyle in 1:54.69, Meyering took the 100 freestyle in :49.73, Skaggs won the 100 breaststroke in 1:02.19 and Lucas Dattels came in first in the 100 butterfly in 1:04.44. Maxwell Lewis won the 1-meter diving event with a score of 179.20 points.

East Girls Unbeaten In O-K Black
The Zeeland East girls basketball team improved to 3-0 in O-K Black Conference action with a pair of victories last week.
On Jan. 7, Zeeland East defeated Hamilton on the road 50-41, as senior guard Mirra Fenlon led the way for the Chix with 24 points.
Senior center Emily Wieringa added 12 points for East and sophomore guard Lizzie Risdon eight.
Then last Friday, the Chix defeated Spring Lake 45-29, for their third straight win.
East took an 8-2 record heading into a first-place battle with Holland Christian on Tuesday night. Details of that game will be in the Jan. 23 edition of the Record.

On Jan. 7, the Chix defeated Hamilton 68-44 for their first O-K Black Conference win. East led 21-16 after one quarter and 32-24 at the half.
The Hawkeyes crept to within six early in the third quarter at 36-30, but the Chix ran off the next nine points and maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the game.
Senior forward BJ Walker poured in 34 points to lead East, 16 of them in the fourth quarter. He also pulled down seven rebounds. Sophomore guard Will Drnek added 17 points.
Senior forward Quincy Thome grabbed six rebounds and added four steals, and senior guard Owen VerSteeg had five boards and three steals.
Then last Friday, East defeated Spring Lake 70-64. It was a close contest all the way, with the Chix leading 33-29 at the half.
Walker led the way again for the Chix in the win over the Lakers, scoring 23 points and pulling down five rebounds. Junior forward Caleb Claerbaut added a season-high 20 points, including six 3-point baskets, and blocked three shots. Drnek chipped in 16 points and dished out four assists.
East improved to 2-1 in the O-K Black and 6-5 overall with the wins.

The Zeeland West girls basketball team broke a three-game losing streak last Friday with a 52-28 O-K Black Conference win over Hamilton.
The Dux, now 1-2 in the Black and 6-3 overall, took a 15-11 lead after one quarter, then clamped down on the Hawkeyes’ offense the rest of the way.
West extended its lead to 30-16 at halftime and 44-20 after three quarters.
Senior guard Jordyn Klaasen led the Dux with 17 points, 10 of them in the third quarter. Senior center Hannah Stroebe added 10 points. Senior forward Georgia Kuyers and junior forward Brooklyn Haight contributed eight points apiece.
Earlier in the week, West dropped a 55-44 decision to Unity Christian on Jan. 7. Sophomore guard Sadie Kragt led the Dux with 18 points while Kuyers added 11.

The Zeeland West boys wrestling team placed fourth last Saturday at the Tim Horn Invitational at Holland High School, posting a record of 3-2 for the day.
The Dux posted wins over Hanover-Horton, 45-24, Forest Hills Eastern, 66-6, and Kenowa Hills, 45-34.
West was defeated by eventual champion Allegan, 54-21, and West Ottawa, 50-30, in the championship round.
Aiden Chavez and Sam Taylor posted perfect 5-0 records for the meet. Austin Ulberg and Justin Sanchez went 4-1 for the day, while Daniel Lozano and Camden Stryker posted 3-2 records.
Earlier in the week on Jan. 8, Zeeland West posted wins over Grand Rapids West Catholic, 60-24, and Unity Christian, 57-24. Chavez, Taylor, Ulberg, Sanchez, Jackson Burkhour, Lachlan Thoreson, Jovan Compean, Luke Walters and Madi Galaviz won both their matches for the night.
Meanwhile, the West girls wrestlers competed in a meet at Northview High School last Saturday. Emmaline Kouw and Rozlyn Altamira placed fourth at that meet for the Dux.
