Clinton Township man convicted of first-degree murder in wife’s shooting death

On Thursday, a 31-year-old man was found guilty of First Degree Premeditated Murder and Felony Firearm by a Macomb County jury for murdering his wife in the presence of two of their children after a six-day jury trial by Macomb County Assistant Prosecutors Kumar Palepu and Kelsey Heath.

In October 2023, Steven Bryce Wheeler shot his wife in the head five times with a .45 caliber handgun in their home. The jury found him guilty as charged. First-Degree Premeditated Murder has a penalty of life without the possibility of parole.

Wheeler is scheduled to be sentenced by Macomb County Circuit Court Judge Julie Gatti on Wednesday, February 26, at 9 a.m.

“This conviction delivers justice for a tragic and senseless act of violence,” said Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido. “Domestic violence doesn’t just claim one life—it leaves behind deep and enduring scars on everyone involved, especially children who are robbed of their innocence. No child should have to endure such trauma, and no community should have to bear the weight of such a loss. I am grateful for the diligent work of our talented team, including law enforcement officers who investigated this case. Our hearts remain with the family as they navigate the immense pain of this tragedy.”
