A Climax woman is hosting a Prom Dress Shop event offering free and low priced prom dresses to young ladies in high school in the area who cannot afford a new prom dress.

Brenda Eddy, of Climax, said the event will be held Saturday, February 22 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. in the lobby area in front of the cafetorium between the C-S High School office and auxiliary gym. If needed, the cafetorium will be used as well. She said there will be changing rooms available.

Realizing the economy is challenging, Eddy discovered some young ladies can’t afford to pay $100, $200, or more, for a prom dress, so she wanted to help.

“There are some dresses that parents are paying $300 and $400 for. You want them to be beautiful,” said Eddy.

The Climax woman said she was looking online for prom dresses and felt even some reasonably priced dresses would be difficult for some girls to afford.

“I thought, do you know how many girls would die to be able to wear something like this. I said o.k., I’m going to do this,” said Eddy about her decision to hold the Prom Dress Shop event.

She started her venture on Facebook’s Market Place, asking viewers for prom dress donations.

“That night, I just started messaging all these people that had their dresses listed. It went crazy. Within two, three weeks, I’ve gotten around 60 dresses donated to me,” said Eddy, who said she
received dresses from Kalamazoo, Athens, Marshall, Battle Creek, Galesburg, and other areas.

Eddy said she drove to the locations to pick up the donated dresses.

She said some of the dresses the sellers were asking $70-$80 but the donors recognized it was for a good cause so they donated the dresses to her.

She also located an online site that makes prom dresses and she purchased approximately 30 more dresses she plans to sell for $25 to $50, depending on what she paid for the dress.
She currently has 80-90 new and used prom dresses for the event.

Eddy said there are a variety of sizes ranging from extra small up to 3X. The Climax woman adds there are a variety of colors as well.

“There’s plain long, sequin long to short. There’s something really for everybody,” said Eddy, who has lived in Climax 21 years.

Eddy adds she will accept prom dress donations until February 15. They must be clean and in very good condition. All colors and sizes are appreciated. Call Eddy at 269-601-0373 for more
information.
