C-S trailed the Cougars 8-7 after one quarter, but the offense, behind 11 points including a trio of three-point baskets from Chase VanMiddlesworth, perked up in the second frame when the Panthers outscored the visitors 19-16 for a 26-24 halftime advantage.

The two teams played even in the third quarter, with C-S maintaining the two-point edge (37-35) to set up a tight fourth quarter.

C-S came through with key baskets and some big rebounds in the fourth quarter to hold on for the win.

Momentum Is Shortlived for C-S Boys Basketball Team

After securing a 70-28 win over Athens January 24 at C-S Jr./Sr. High School that also snapped a three-game losing streak, the Climax-Scotts boys varsity basketball team saw the momentum end the next night in a 59-38 loss to Bellevue in a make up game at Bellevue.

C-S, now 2-6 in the SCAA West Division, got off to a slow start, managing just a Dane Sattler basket in the first quarter, resulting in a 12-2 deficit after one quarter.

The two teams played even in the second quarter, with Bellevue taking a 22-12 halftime lead.

The Broncos would not let C-S enjoy many runs in the third quarter, stretching the lead to 41-24 after three quarters.

A trio of three-point baskets helped C-S to its largest offensive quarter, however the Broncos outscored the visitors 17-14 in the fourth quarter.

C-S was frustrated often with its floor shooting, connecting on 29 percent overall (14-49) from the floor.

C-S also struggled at the free throw line, making just 2-of-10 attempts.

Bellevue shot a much more crisp 50 percent overall (22-44) from the floor.

Panthers Can’t Overcome Slow Start in Loss to Mendon

Climax-Scotts couldn’t overcome a challenging first half at the offensive end in a 52-38 loss to Mendon January 22 at Mendon.

Six turnovers and a 3-for-12 effort from the floor in the first start factored in a slow start, while Mendon shot a blistering 77.7% (7-for-9) overall from the floor that helped the Hornets take a 16-8 lead after one quarter.

C-S’ floor shooting challenges continued in the second frame when the visitors connected on just 28.5% (4-14) overall from the floor. However six Mendon turnovers helped the Panthers keep the deficit in single digits, with the Hornets settling for a 25-16 halftime lead.

Mendon’s shooting picked up in the third quarter, as the home team knocked down 9-of-10 two-point attempts. C-S shot a cool 22 percent (2-9) from two-point range and saw its deficit swell to 21 points (43-22) entering the final quarter.

The Panthers, behind a 5-for-10 effort from the two-point line and 2 more three-point baskets, made a small comeback in the fourth quarter but the deficit was too large.

C-S struggled offensively, making 29 percent of its overall attempts (16-56) including a 4-for-21 effort from the three-point line.

Mendon shot a much warmer 67 percent (22-33) from two-point range and finished shooting 63 percent overall (24-38).
