The Prosecuting Attorneys Association of Michigan will present the Traffic Safety Training Program Webinar “Let’s Take a Nystagmus Trip—Journeying Beyond the Jerk” on Thursday, March 6, from noon to 1:30 p.m. via Zoom.
This session will focus on the involuntary jerking of the eyes that law enforcement officers are trained to detect during impaired driving investigations. This schooling will provide an in-depth explanation of the need for a motorist to have keen visual acuity for safe driving; how uncontrolled changes in eye movements, known as nystagmus, interferes with decision-making.
The coaching will include an expansion of the practitioner's knowledge and the proper application of the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus or HGN Test. Advanced tutoring will be provided on other types of nystagmus, as well as other unusual eye movements, to better prepare law enforcement officers and prosecutors for challenges in the Halls of Justice. Speaking at the webinar will be Chuck Matson.
