Lady Panthers continue to
put up big offensive numbers


The Climax-Scotts varsity softball team continued to put up big offensive numbers in a 28-8 win over Bellevue April 17 at Bellevue.

The Lady Panthers, now 3-0, have scored at least 20 runs in each of their first games.

A 12-run first inning got C-S off to a good start.

C-S exploded for 15 more runs in the fourth inning.

Ashlynn Gilbert, who had a double and triple and drove in six runs, led the 10-hit Panther hitting attack with three hits. Lylah Parrish added two hits including a double and drove in three runs.

Baseball team suffers
1st loss of season


Kalamazoo Loy Norrix broke open a close game with a four-run outburst in the bottom of the sixth inning and held on for a 9-4 win over the Climax-Scotts varsity baseball team April 18 at Loy Norrix.

The loss was the first of the season for C-S (3-1), which was also trailing Kalamazoo Hackett 3-2 in the bottom of the third inning.

Ben Nelson had two of C-S’ five hits against Loy Norrix.

Starting pitcher Carter Dzwik suffered the loss. He pitched the first four and one-third innings, allowing four hits, one earned run and two walks to go with seven strikeouts.

C-S’ scheduled game April 15 against Colon was postponed and is scheduled to be made up as part of a doubleheader May 1 at Colon at 4 p.m.

Offense stalls for JV baseball
in two losses


After combining for 36 runs and 20 hits in a season opening doubleheader sweep over Galesburg-Augusta, the Climax-Scotts JV baseball team was held scoreless and managed just three hits in each game in a pair of losses to Kalamazoo Loy Norrix April 21, 7-0 and 15-0.

C-S, now 2-2, received one hit apiece from Alex Wurtzel, Dane Sattler and Cooper Dinse in the first game.

 While starting pitcher Nyle Sattler did not allow an earned run and just three hits over the first two innings, he absorbed the loss after Loy Norrix scored five unearned runs. He struck out four Knights and walked one.

Alex Wurtzel, who had a double, Aiden Krick, who had a double, and Cooper Dinse, provided C-S’ hits in the second game.

Wurtzel suffered the loss in the second game, allowing six hits, five earned runs and five walks with one strikeout over one and one-third inning pitched.

C-S golf team places 4th in opening action


The Climax-Scotts golf team finished fourth in the first SCAA jamboree of the season April 21 at Ella Sharp Golf Course in Jackson.

C-S totaled a 181, four strokes behind third place finishing Colon and 12 strokes behind Jackson Christian (165), which placed first.

Carter Pio was low scorer for C-S, shooting a 42. Rounding out the top four golfers for C-S was Cole Reitz, with a 44, Jackson Bagwell, with a 47 and Luke Piper, with a 48.

C-S track teams continue
to show improvement


Six top three finishes including four first place finishes helped the Climax-Scotts mens track team to a fourth place finish at the Hillsdale Academy Invite April 18 at Hillsdale and four top three finishes including one first place, helped the Lady Panthers to a sixth place finish at the same event.

Hillsdale Academy won the mens event with 151 points. C-S totaled 107.5 points. Hillsdale Academy also won the women's event with 184.5 points. C-S finished with 45 points.
C-S senior Chase VanMiddlesworth, and junior Gabe Walliczeck each earned two first place finishes.

Walliczeck continues his impressive early season ascension in both the shot put and discus. After recording a throw of 45’07” in the season opening meet that put him 6th in Division 4, the C-S junior recorded a personal record toss of 49’1” at the Hillsdale Academy Invite for a first place finish. He also placed first in the discus with a throw of 143’6”.
Walliczeck broke the school record in the discus in the first meet of the season with a throw of 149’7”, which C-S coach Dave Lodes said is No. 1 in Division 4.

VanMiddlesworth placed first in the 100-meter dash (11.55), and 200-meter dash (23.41).

Paige Amos had the Lady Panthers’ lone first place finish, posting a time of 29.25 in the 200-meter dash.

Annabelle Edwards earned a second place finish in the high jump with a leap of 4’10”.

C-S Men Win First SCAA Event, Girls Place Third


The Climax-Scotts mens track team placed first in seven events, helping the team to a first place finish in the first SCAA event of the season April 16 at C-S Jr./Sr. High School.

The men finished with 205.5 points while the Lady Panther track team enjoyed five first place finishes and finished in third place with 99 points.

Gabe Walliczeck won two events, and Luke Lawrence, Chase VanMiddlesworth and Maximus Wurtzel each placed first in one event and helped a relay team to a first place finish to lead the boys.

Walliczeck won the shot put with a throw of 44’5.5”, and the discus with a toss of 146’0”.

Lawrence won the 300-meter hurdles with a personal record time of 41.79, he joined Chase VanMiddlesworth, Johann Albarran and Jordon Grove on the 4x200-meter relay team that placed first with a time of 1:37.48.

VanMiddlesworth won the 200-meter dash with a season record time of 23.29.

Wurtzel won the 100-meter dash with a personal record time of 11.66, and was also a member of the first place finishing 4x200-meter relay team.

The 4x800-meter relay team composed of Julian Garcia, Alexander Wurtzel, Zach Roebuck, and Nate Arnett finished in a time for first place with Waldron with a time of 10:04.49.

Sophie Braithwaite and Paige Amos each won one event and helped a relay team to a first place finish to pace the C-S girls.

Sophie Braithwaite, with a season record time of 13.67, won the 100-meter dash, and joined Paige Amos, Addy Reeves and Tolly Talbert for a first place finish in the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 54.92.

Amos, with a season record time of 28.47, won the 200-meter dash, Annabelle Edwards, with a personal record of 4’11, won the high jump and Addy Reeves, with a season record distance of 14’ 4.5” placed first in the long jump.
